It’s Time For Dorkwave

The TV Guide

I made it home to Detroit, MI safe and sound last night … early enough so that Sarah, her mom and I could catch a showing of Gravity in IMAX 3D They hadn’t seen the movie yet and I was dying to see it again without the technical difficulties and … a great time was had. While I still with the film’s story was a bit more fortified, the special effects space scenes were just as dizzyingly fantastic as the first time (even better, to be honest). Tonight, tho … tonight is going to be a BLAST! My all-time favorite danceparty DORKWAVE is celebrating their 9 1/2 year anniversary at the Corktown Tavern and my friends and I will be there to dance the night away!

I’ve enjoyed many fun nights dancing at Dorkwave and I’m hoping for another such fun night tonight. Dorkwave goes back to the days before hipsters were an annoying joke. Back when things were genuinely cool. A lot has changed in the past 9 1/2 years but I’m happy to see that the Dorkwave party is still going (relatively) strong. I’m so excited! There are a lot of other fun things planned for my visit home but tonight’s Dorkwave danceparty is one of the biggies :) I hope your Saturday is treating you well. Have an amazing weekend!!

Bar?a make contact with ex-Newell?s coach ?Tata? Martino to replace Tito [MARCA]

Currently without a club having just completed his contract with Newell?s Old Boys ? who he took to this years Copa Libertadores semi-finals ? Tata was linked with Malaga and Real Sociedad and is believed to be interested in a switch to the Spanish Primera Liga.

At the tender managing age of a half century, Tata has already managed 9 clubs, and has spent the bulk of his coaching career in Paraguay, where he notably took the Paraguay national team to the 2010 World Cup quarter finals.

A Rosario native, Newell?s is his first club, though, having played for the Lepers in 3 spells as a player.

Below is a long interview with Tata Martino, where he discusses his unorthodox and storied career.

Emmy nominations leave snubbed shows, stars behind

NEW YORK (AP) ? That cliche about awards says it's an honor just to be nominated. But what about all the worthies Emmy overlooks each year? Are they being dishonored by Emmy's neglect?

It was a question raised by Emmy's latest round of snubs as this year's nominees were announced Thursday.

HBO's magnificent "Treme"? Jilted yet again.

Same for AMC's "The Walking Dead" and HBO's "True Blood." They just seem to freak out Emmy judges.

Showtime's "Dexter" was shut out, too, with no Emmy love lost on Michael C. Hall (a past best-actor nominee five years in a row) or for Jennifer Carpenter, who, as Dexter's foul-mouthed sister, has never been nominated for one of TV's most vivid portrayals.

Anyone who saw Tatiana Maslany in BBC America's "Orphan Black" was floored by her multiple roles as identical women who were revealed to be clones. But Emmy shut its eyes to a salute for her.

FX's motorcycle drama "Sons of Anarchy" continues to get Emmy's cold shoulder, despite riveting performances from an impressive gang of actors (including Katey Sagal, who won a 2011 Golden Globe for her role as the motorcycle club's firey matriarch but, in her long career, has never snagged an Emmy nomination).

And what about "The Americans," FX's splendid Cold War-era thriller? Sure, it scored a guest-actress nod for Margo Martindale. But how to explain zero recognition for terrific performances by stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys (not to mention the sly supporting-actor turn by Noah Emmerich)?

Speaking of indelible supporting actors: Christopher Heyerdahl as The Swede on AMC's "Hell on Wheels," which, like Heyerdahl, was spurned by the Emmys.

And is there any point in lamenting a second year that Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman were forgotten along with their great work for AMC's "The Killing"?

Kevin Bacon's entry into series TV was received with excitement when Fox's serial-killer drama "The Following" debuted earlier this year, but it was "hold the Bacon" at the Emmys as he and his series was ignored.

What a difference a year makes: Fox's comedy "New Girl" landed two Emmy nominations last season ? for lead actress Zooey Deschanel and supporting actor Max Greenfield. They and the show got nada on Thursday.

Jon Cryer, last year's best-actor winner for the CBS comedy "Two and a Half Men," was shut out of a nomination this year.

And "Modern Family" star Eric Stonestreet, last year's winner as comedy supporting actor, failed to make the cut this year. Three of Stonestreet's cast mates on the ABC hit were named instead.

On Thursday the broadcast networks were crowing about their nominations, with ABC reaping 45 and CBS and NBC both claiming 53.

But none came close to HBO's 108, and Emmy continued to be unimpressed with the crop of new series the broadcast networks introduced the past year, in what might suggest a distressing trend.

During the 2011-12 season, only nine freshman series on the five broadcast networks got so much as a single nomination. During the 2012-13 season, that number shrank to these two major nominations for a pair of new series: Connie Britton as best actress on ABC's "Nashville," and Anthony Bourdain on ABC's "The Taste" as outstanding host of a reality-competition show.

Meanwhile, Internet TV network Netflix scored four major nominations (out of 14 in all) as it entered the Emmy fray with its new online originals: a trifecta for "House of Cards" (outstanding drama series, lead actor and lead actress) as well as outstanding lead actor for the comedy "Arrested Development."

So far in its first Emmys race, Netflix clearly feels honored.

Comic-Con 2013: Harrison Ford can't escape his past (but he's trying)

Comic-Con 2013: Harrison Ford came to Comic-Con 2013 to discuss his current movie, 'Ender's Game,' but the attendees wanted to hear about Ford's roles of decades past.

It's been years since Harrison Ford played film characters Indiana Jones and Han Solo, but the questions still come ? especially at?Comic-Con.

Ford made his second appearance at the all-things-geek gathering in the U.S. on Thursday to promote his new film, "Ender's Game."

But fans instead peppered the 71-year-old with questions about characters he left behind long ago.

One fan asked what might happen if Solo, the Millenium Falcon pilot from "Star Wars," met Jones, the adventure-addicted archaeologist.

"Hi, how are you?" Ford asked before shaking his head, taking off his glasses, and rubbing his eyes in a marvelous moment of comedic timing.

Another questioner, a man from Brazil who said he dreamed of being the whip-wielding Jones as a kid, asked if Solo would make a good soldier for Col. Hyrum Graff, the character Ford plays in "Ender's Game."

"You know, you and I have a lot in common. I used to dream about being Indiana Jones when I was younger. Not so much anymore," Ford said, pausing while the audience laughed. "I don't think Han Solo would be good as a soldier in anybody's army. I think he's what we call now an independent contractor."

Israel plans settlements despite EU?s tougher line

Israel is pushing ahead with West Bank settlement construction plans despite the fact US secretary of state John Kerry is in the region in an effort to finalise a formula to get Israel and the Palestinians around the negotiating table.

An Israeli planning committee yesterday approved the construction of 741 West Bank homes for Jewish settlers, most in the ultra-Orthodox community of Modi?in Elit.

The move came a day after the decision by the European Union banning European funding for Israeli enterprises in occupied territory.

It remains to be seen if the new settlement plans, which require the approval of defence minister Moshe Ya?alon, will affect Mr Kerry?s efforts to break the diplomatic deadlock. After two meetings in the Jordanian capital Amman with Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, Mr Kerry sounded optimistic that a breakthrough was close.

?We have been able to narrow these gaps very significantly. And so we continue to get closer and I continue to remain hopeful that the sides can soon be able to come and sit at the same table.?

US package
Mr Abbas was due to convene senior officials today to brief them on the American package to renew the talks, which broke down in 2010 in a dispute over Israeli settlement building.

Israel warned that the EU decree excluding all Israeli bodies operating in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Golan Heights from agreements signed with Israel will encourage Palestinian intransigence. Prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu yesterday talked by phone to a number of European leaders in an effort to persuade them to delay implementation of the decree, which is due to go into effect tomorrow.

However, Israeli officials conceded the chances were slim of changing the European decision.

Cost
Israeli economists estimated that the new decree could cost Israel hundreds of millions of euro and there was a danger that the same policy will be adopted by individual EU member states.

An Israeli official accused the EU of taking a unilateral, pro-Palestinian position, meaning Europe could no longer be considered an honest broker with a role to play in peace efforts.

Some right-wing Knesset members advocated an aggressive Israeli response, such as blocking EU-funded development projects for Palestinians or restricting the movement of European diplomats in the West Bank. They also proposed cancelling all planned gestures to the Palestinians, such as a prisoner release.

Justice minister Tzipi Livni termed the EU move a ?resounding wake-up call? for Israel. ?It is regrettable that we?ve reached this situation, but I hope that now all those who thought that it was possible to continue the impasse and who said that our situation has never been better, will realise that we must act and begin negotiations.?

A Palestinian source said the next stage was to ensure the EU enforces its directives and creates obstacles to the settlement enterprise.

Insurance - Mexico - Mexican government drafting unemployment benefits scheme

The Mexican government is drafting an unemployment benefits scheme which would require 30bn pesos (US$2.39bn) annually in tax revenue and would attend to the 575,000 workers who lose their jobs each year, said labor minister Alfonso Navarrete Prida, as reported by local newspaper El Financiero.

The benefits would kick in one month after an employee loses their job, and would provide "just over" the minimum wage for a period of three to six months. The precise length of time will be defined by consensus under the 'Pact for Mexico,' he said.

Navarrete said the government was looking at two different unemployment benefit models being used in different parts of the world: one which would be 100% funded by the government, and a tripartite system which would involve contributions from employee and employer as well as the government.

The first model would be subject to judicial approval as it would have to be included in the government's yearly budget.

Under the tripartite system the employee would contribute towards an unemployment fund, which would motivate workers to seek employment as soon as possible so as to minimize personal costs. The drawback of such a system would be the cost to the employer, said Navarrete, according to El Financiero.

As well as receiving a monthly salary above the minimum wage, the out-of-work would receive support such as training from the country's national employment service SNE, and the chance to obtain new qualifications.

Of the 575,000 Mexicans who lose their job every year, 50% find a new one within the first month, 25% find employment between two and four months later, and another 25% take more than four months to find work, said the official.

SpaceGhostPurrp Trolls A$AP Mob on Twitter & Facebook: "U Mad?" (@SpaceGhxstPurrp @asvpxrocky)

Jul 16, 2013 | 8:00 PM??? Written By: Mike Hughes

SpaceGhostPurrp fired off an array of shots at A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg and A$AP Twelvyy on Twitter and Facebook recently. ?He tweeted "F*CK SHABBA?" which was a shot at Ferg's new track, "Shabba," and called A$AP Twelvyy and his crew "devil worshipers" in another tweet. ?

SpaceGhost continued to tweet and post comments on Facebook about how "wack" he feels A$AP Rocky and his crew is, and how he "ruined" A$AP's career, on top of trolling him for having worn skirt-like shirts in the past. Purrp posted a series of "U Mad?" comments on both social networks to mock the A$AP Mob as he trolled them. ?Purrp also aired out A$AP Twelvyy for allegedly working at Best Buy, and got loads of fans to retweet funny jokes about Twelvyy having the job prior to rap.

Check out what he had to say above. ?Rocky has yet to respond.

PBS station takes on reality TV in 'quality' spoofs

TV

Move over, "Deadliest Catch!" The "Clam Kings" are set to show viewers some fresh shellfish shenanigans.

Or not.

Actually, a new trailer on YouTube, which at first seems to promote a reality TV show called "Clam Kings," is really just a spoof on the whole genre -- and a creative fundraising effort from one PBS station.

"When it comes to clams, these two aren't shucking around," an announcer says after introducing the audience to a couple of bumbling clam diggers.

But after flashing the date and time for this non-show, a different message comes on the screen.

"The fact you thought this was a real show says a lot about the state of TV," it reads. "Support quality programming."

The spoof is just one of three new clips from New York PBS affiliate WNET (also known as Thirteen), which urges viewers to make donations to the station to keep the "quality" coming.

Other sendups from the station include "Long Island Landscapers," an all-too-real-looking reality TV spoof that focuses on a team of yard guys who "are going over the hedge." And there's "Meet the Tanners," a laughable took at a sun-loving family with questionable priorities. ("We have rules in this house," mom insists. "If you sass me, you go to the shade.")

The current spots are just the latest from Thirteen's #TVGONEWRONG campaign. In May, the station ran subway ads for such fake shows as "Bad Bad Bag Boys" (where there's a "Clean up on every aisle"), "Knitting Wars," "Bayou Eskimos," "Married to a Mime," and "The Dillionaire" (because, of course, "Life's a pickle").

What do you think of the ads? Are they fair slams at the current state of TV? Click "talk about it" below and tell us.

Report: Apple in Talks to Buy the Company That Made Kinect Sensors

If you can?t beat ?em, take ?em over. At least, that?s what Apple might be thinking, as rumour has it that Cook and co are in talks to acquire Primesense, the compnay which makes the 3D sensors used in Kinect.

According to Israeli newspaper Calcalist, Apple has offered up a cool ?185 million to buy the company. The negotiations apparently arose when a team from Apple visited Primesense ? whose chips ended up in the first Kinect ? to discuss embedding its technology into Apple products.

The 3D sensing technology developed by Primesense has already found a home in over 20 million devices. While its focussed on gaming in the past, its recently been working with ASUS to provide 3D sensing in PCs, too. Clearly, Apple thinks it might be able to capitalise on that shift. Fly Or Die: Ploom ModelTwo E-Cig Vaporizer

Screen Shot 2013-07-14 at 9.51.07 AMIt’s been a couple weeks since I reviewed the Ploom ModelTwo e-cig vaporizer, but we thought it fair to have someone else weigh in on the tobacco vaporizer as well. That said, Engadget’s Brian Heater steps up this week (to fill in for John Biggs) and shares his thoughts on the ModelTwo. Ploom has been focused on revolutionizing vaporizers for a while, notably with the Pax loose-leaf botanical vaporizer and now with the ModelTwo. What makes the ModelTwo different from other vaporizers is that it’s not using a synthetic tobacco substitute, but rather heats up small pods of tobacco into vapor. This offers the same rich taste as a real cigarette without all the danger. It also means that you enjoy your smoke break the same way you would for a cigarette, as the tobacco pods aren’t meant to be toked a few times and then revisited later. Each pod takes about ten minutes to finish. All in all, we think the $39 device is a solid option if you’re in the market for a vaporizer. Brian took some convincing, but at the end of the day: Two flies.

Labour greybeards back Ed Miliband's plans to reform union link

The survey by ComRes for the Sunday Mirror and Independent on Sunday puts Labour on 36 per cent with David Cameron?s party on 28 per cent.

The UK Independence Party is on 18 per cent with the Liberal Democrats trailing in fourth on just eight per cent.

Mr Straw, speaking at the Telegraph Ways With Words Festival in Dartington Hall, Devon, said ?I agree with what Ed Miliband is proposing in respect of the relationship with the trade unions.

?The truth is that the trade unions play a less central role in people?s lives than they used to. That is a matter of regret, but it?s true.?

Mr Straw added that unions ?find it difficult these days? to find ?leadership positions of the quality of, for example, Jack Jones or Ernie Bevin?.

He said: ?I think we?ve got to recognise that the central place that trade unions used to play, right at the heart of communities, has gone.

"What Ed is debating is basically an opt out of the union system at the moment by which people pay a political levy and are signed up to the Labour Party automatically; people have to opt in.

He admitted it would affect the finances of the Labour Party, but pointed out the total sum was ?about a third? of the money they Conservative Party receives from hedge funds.

He added: ?Will we be able to fill the gap? I believe we can. I think we need to change our cultural approach to fundraising. In my experience you can raise money.

Mr Mullin, by contrast, said Labour could suffer a financial meltdown, warning: ?I can?t believe Ed is that naive, but it can?t be ruled out.?

Also speaking at the Ways With Words Festival, Mr Mullin added: ?If he does what he says, it is likely to result in a huge collapse in financial support for the Labour Party and usher in a one-party state for years to come.?

He claimed during a previous financial crisis for the party ?a few years back? that the banks ?almost foreclosed on us.?

Mr Mullin observed that Tony Blair, during whose premiership he was a minister, had not attempted to reform the financial link between the unions and Labour. ?If it?s such a good idea, why do you think he didn?t do it??

Mr Johnson, a former postman, said he agreed with Unite?s ?motivation? in wanting to get more working-class people into parliament, rather than middle-class people who had worked at Westminster as advisers and researchers.

He added: ?What happened recently in Falkirk is of course the wrong way to do it, but it was done on the basis of Unite saying that they want to get more working people into Parliament.

?I applaud the motivation but the way they tried to do that is totally unacceptable.?

Mr Johnson has called for a ballot of Labour members to endorse Mr Miliband?s planned reforms.

Bedford New York Real Estate | Bedford NY Homes by Robert Paul ...

Posted on July 14th, 2013 admin

As the housing market heats up again, the real estate industry is facing a new challenge: finding enough younger agents.

Even though many of the top agents make well into six-figures, a new survey shows real estate executives here and across the country are worried about not attracting new blood.

?

?Clearly there?s a resurgence in the housing market among the Gen X and Gen Y participants, and that?s the next market,? says Kevin Hawkins, the vice president of Imprev Inc., a Bellevue real estate marketing firm that did the survey. ?The concern of brokers is not just for today, but what business is going to look like tomorrow.?

?

While buyers are getting younger, agents are not. Only six-percent are under the age of 34.

?

?The average age of a realtor is 57 years old. The average age of an American worker is 41 years old. If you look at the typical age of a first time home buyer, it?s 31. So, there?s clearly an age gap,? he says.

?

During the housing meltdown between 2007 and 2010, there was a tremendous weeding out process in the industry. Hawkins says it was survival of the fittest, and many of the less-experienced agents got out of the business.

?

But the housing market is booming again, yet 42 percent of the real estate executives surveyed said the need for more agents is their number one concern. They?re worried that younger, qualified candidates are going into other industries, and they?re taking their talents with them.

?

?Younger agents are much more adept with technology and the internet and all the other tools that people want to use when they first start looking for a home. The surveys show that older agents are more reluctant to adopting the new technologies,? Hawkins says.

?

Pamela Jensen is a longtime managing broker for Windermere. She has trained many new agents over the last two decades and says being ?young? in the industry can work against you.

?

?What I have found is that if they?re too young, nobody uses them,? she says. ?Many homeowners want someone who has owned a home, or who?s bought and sold one. If you?re 23, you haven?t done that.?

?

She says even the Gen X-ers who work in the tech industry want someone who?s experienced because buying a home is one of the biggest investments they?ll ever make.

?

But Hawkins says with the average age of a real estate agent being 57, the top execs realize they need to revamp their recruiting strategies so that they can attract younger realtors.

?

?If they don?t do it now and this group of realtors ages to a point they start retiring, which we?re getting close to that tipping point, then you?ll see a real loss of opportunity of taking that experience and knowledge and imparting it on a whole new workforce,? he says.

?

Housing market heats up with young buyers but average real estate agent age 57 ? Local ? MyNorthwest.com.

Candy Crush Saga: Another 10 killer hints, guides, and extra lives!

Definitive Candy Crush guide: How to play for eternity, reshuffle your start, and crush all the candy you can!

If you enjoyed our you'll love our second set of top ten winners! Here's where we get into reshuffling your start, crushing even more candy, and... playing for eternity thanks to Facebook!

    1. Reshuffle your candies without losing lives Sometimes just by looking at a new level you know if you'll be in for an easy or a hard time. Luckily, there's a way to change that, and reshuffle a challenging level, without using up any of your lives. On your mobile device, open the level and then press the exit button before you make any moves. When you come back, the candy will be reshuffled and in new, hopefully easier to handle positions. You can do this as many times as you want and no lives will be lost. This trick does not work on the time challenges as the game has already started as the time counts down.

Reshuffle your candies without losing lives

    1. Infinite lives on Facebook On your web browser you can keep multiple tabs open and on Candy Crush at the same time. This means that for those really hard levels you will never have to wait for lives to refresh as on each open version of Candy Crush you have 5 lives ready. When you do pass a level you will have to refresh each webpage but this is exceptionally helpful for those levels which take a lot of lives to pass. Below you can see I have 5 tabs open to Candy Crush and each with 5 lives. Yes, I stole Rene's facebook account to play Candy Crush on it.

    1. Time Challenge add time The trick to passing timed levels is getting as many +5 candies as possible to add more time to clock. Understanding why the +5 candies drop really helps as they do not just drop randomly. The +5's drop every time you make a move which causes a cascade of 4 or more combos. Then make sure you crush that +5 to add it to your timer. You increase your chances of creating a cascade by crushing candies at the bottom of the board as there are more candies above you to make a second, third and then fourth set. Try this on level 252 and you can play until you get bored of the level, I stopped when I hit 1,000,000 points and still had the full 30 seconds on the clock.

    1. Use striped candies strategically Do not waste your striped candies as soon as you get them. Try to plan out where they would be most beneficial and use them to reach those hard to get candies. There are some levels that this skill is essential for passing the level.

    Use striped candies strategically

    1. Save your fish for last Fish candies will zone in on any remaining jellies. Save them for last so you can have them get those hard to reach jellies. They will also get rid of jellies which are under frosting blocks without needing to get rid of the frosting making passing levels even faster.

    Save your fish for last

    1. Finish with extra moves left If you complete a level with extra moves left over they will transfer into more points as a school of jelly fish or striped candy will clear parts of the board. This does not guarantee that you will garner more points but usually it is a safe bet in order to hit those high scores

    Finish with extra moves left

    1. Pink bow If you have a level with a pink bow on it, then one of your Facebook friends have given you a gift of 3 extra moves. To use this on mobile, just play the level and the three extra moves are added automatically. If you are playing on the web on Facebook you can see the number of +3 moves you were given in the starting screen. You just click on the +3 moves in the starting screen to activate it.

    Pink bow

    1. Gifts from friends You only have a maximum of 5 lives (or sometimes 6) so dont accept lives from your friends until you can use them. If you accept lives when you are already maxed out the lives are wasted. I use the X to close the screen and wait until I'm under 5 lives remaining to click accept. Also know that the level you happen to be on when you accept a +3 moves will be the level that gift must be used on. So I only accept a +3 moves gift on the levels I am really struggling with.

    Gifts from friends

    1. Battle Plan You want to eliminate the most dangerous candies first. Usually that would mean clearing the bombs then chocolate and finally any locked candies.

    Battle Plan

    1. Dealing with ingredients You do not want to start a level with ingredients on the far right or left of the board. Along the sides of the screen, you have many fewer options to create a set of three or more similar candies. You can restart the level if you notice this before you have moved (see tip 1). You can also try to move the ingredients closer to the middle by crushing candies. Unless forced never move an ingredient to a square with no exit underneath it or to the side of the screen. The exits look like small green circles with white arrows inside them.

    Dealing with ingredients

(AP) ? A Russian booster rocket carrying three satellites burst into flames and crashed during a launch shown on live TV Tuesday, the latest in a string of failures for Russia's commercial space program.

The Proton-M booster unexpectedly shut down the engine 17 seconds into the flight and crashed some 2 kilometers (over a mile) away from the Baikonur launch pad in Kazakhstan, the Russian Space Agency said in a statement.

News channel Rossiya-24's footage showed the rocket tilt to one side shortly after the launch, curve downward, catch fire and crash.

Russian officials said there were no casualties or damage immediately reported. Meanwhile, the Interfax news agency quoted Kazakh Emergency Situations Minister Vladimir Bozhkov as saying that the burning rocket fuel has blanketed the launch pad with a toxic cloud. But he said authorities have yet to determine its potential danger to the environment.

Another Proton-M booster carrying two satellites crashed in Baikonur in August 2012. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev chided officials after that incident, saying that Russia had lost 10 satellites in seven failed launches in just over a year.

Russian space officials have blamed the failures on manufacturing flaws and engineering mistakes. But observers say that the problem is rooted in a post-Soviet industrial meltdown that has stalled the modernization of the space industry.

Medvedev on Tuesday instructed Dmitry Rogozin, the point man for industry and space, to come up with a plan to tighten control of the space industry and prevent accidents like this one from happening.

A Simple Adapter Turns Your Binoculars Into a Smartphone Zoom Lens

Camera-equipped smartphones aren't quite the perfect replacement for a digital camera just yet. They lack manual controls, use tiny sensors, and their simple lenses lack the ability to zoom. (And no, digital zoom doesn't count.) But if you've already got yourself a powerful set of binoculars, this simple adapter will turn them into a powerful telephoto lens for your phone, as long as you don't mind some unwieldy bulk.

Zynga Officially Names Microsoft's Don Mattrick As CEO, Pincus Stays On As CPO And Board Chairman

Mark and DonIn an email to all employees, Zynga just announced that veteran executive Don Mattrick will be the gaming giant’s new CEO, and former CEO and co-founder Mark Pincus will now be its Chief Product Officer as well as remaining the Chairman of its Board of Directors. Mattrick comes from Microsoft in a sudden move, and was previously at Zynga competitor Electronic Arts. Pincus explained in an email to staff and a blog post that “I?ve always said to Bing and our Board that if I could find someone who could do a better job as our CEO I?d do all I could to recruit and bring that person in. I?m confident that Don is that leader.” He also noted “Zynga has so much more potential ahead, the opportunity to be an Internet Treasure and deliver on our mission of connecting the world through games.” Until today, Mattrick was Microsoft?s President of Interactive Entertainment. He most recently delivered the news that Microsoft would retreat following backlash in response to announcements that its new Xbox One would have digital rights management preventing users from freely swapping games and would require an Internet connection to play games. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer sent an email to his employees saying “This is a great opportunity for Don, and I wish him success. Don?s directs will report to me and will continue to drive the day-to-day business as a team, particularly focused on shipping Xbox One this holiday.?Thank you, Don, for setting us on a path to completely redefine the entertainment industry.” As the new CEO he inherits a tough job of completing Zynga’s transition from a web-focused Facebook games company to a multi-platform developer with its own properties and a focus on mobile. The news leaked this morning via Kara Swisher to positive reactions from Zynga shareholders who boosted the company’s stock price 10.43% to $3.07. After hours the stock has gone up another 3.58% to $3.18 following the announcement. Zynga is still struggling to recover from a disastrous IPO at the end of 2011 and a string of soggy games that have failed to bring in the users or dollars the way its old hits FarmVille and CityVille did. The question will be whether Mattrick can restore morale and get Zynga producing beloved games again while simultaneously laying off employees to make the company more financially sound.

Singapore to Indonesia: Stop sending us your smog.

Air pollution in Singapore?rose to unhealthy levels this week because of illegal forest clearing in Indonesia,?prompting?Singapore?to urge Indonesia to do something to end the haze.

    By Sara Schonhardt,?Correspondent / June 20, 2013

A masked man walks as the sun sets among buildings covered with haze at the Singapore Central Business District Thursday, June 20, 2013. Singapore urged people to remain indoors amid unprecedented levels of air pollution Thursday as a smoky haze wrought by forest fires in neighboring Indonesia worsened dramatically.

Cloudy skies in Jakarta were no match for the breathtaking haze that hit Singapore?on Thursday?as air-pollution levels rose to record highs and sparked a war of words between diplomats in both countries over who should shoulder the blame.

Companies have asked employees to work from home, the military has stopped training outdoors, and pictures of Singapore's iconic Marine Bay Sands towers barely visible through the haze have been splashed across social media platforms?and newspapers.

Despite the international blame game, the immediate cause was clear enough: fires used to clear land in Sumatra for farming and palm oil plantations. A local meteorological agency reported nearly 150 hotspots alone in Riau Province, itself a hotspot for mining, logging, and palm oil production.

Environmental advocacy group Greenpeace released a statement saying that the fires illustrated how Indonesia?s government policies aimed at reducing deforestation had failed?since half of them were in areas off-limits to land clearing.

Each year slash and burn practices in Indonesia shroud neighboring Singapore and Malaysia in thick haze. As deforestation has accelerated in recent years, it has worsened.

On Thursday,?Singapore sent a delegation from its environmental agency to Jakarta to call for immediate action.?Singapore?s environment minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, issued an angry statement?on his Facebook page saying no country or corporation ?has the right to pollute the air at the expense of Singaporeans? health and well-being.??

But Indonesia shot back its own statement: Singapore should stop ?behaving like a child,? said Indonesia?s?Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare, Agung Laksono, who oversees fire response.

Mr. Balakrishnan had asked the Indonesian government to name and shame the companies involved in the illegal burning. But Indonesia?s forestry ministry launched back, saying?Singapore and Malaysia shared the responsibility for putting pressure on the resource extraction industry since many of companies were based in their countries.

HTC One launch vid disappears, but not before claiming it's 'everything your phone isn't'

We've commented before on how HTC always seems to come in second to Samsung -- not because it has inferior hardware, but because its marketing budget is comparable to what's fallen between the cushions of Sammy's sofa. We might have seen the start of a new strategy from HTC, however, as the company appears to have collaborated with Funny or Die on a comedic promo for the HTC One. It surfaced at the end of last week, but seems to have since been removed from the site. (It's possible HTC deliberately pulled it for some reason, and we've reached out for comment.) In the meantime, copies have found their way onto YouTube, and AdAge reports it'll start showing up on some websites today, and in a bunch of movie theaters from April 26th. A spoof of The Bachelorette, hosted by James Van Der Beek Dawson Leery, the clip depicts the leading lady deciding on her next handset, with the One winning out against feature-lacking peers -- or rather, people dressed in phone costumes. HTC even go as far as coining a bold tagline for the flagship: it's "everything your phone isn't." Whether it's actually funny is up to you, so check out the full skit below.
